The temple's history, as evidenced by inscriptions, dates back to the period of the Chola Empire, specifically during the reigns of Rajaraja Chola I (985-1014 CE), Rajendra Chola I (1012-1044 CE), and Kulothunga Chola I (1070-1120 CE).
These inscriptions indicate various grants to the temple, solidifying its importance during the Chola era. The temple's history continues with royal patronage from the Pandya kings and Nayaks after the Chola period.

The temple is also associated with the legend of Sage Agasthya and Vaali. According to the legend, both wanted to consecrate a Shiva Lingam here. Sage Agasthya is said to have already consecrated a Lingam with sand before Vaali could reach with a Lingam from Kashi, leading Vaali to consecrate his own Lingam across the river at Ayalur (Sriramasamuthiram), where a temple known as Valeeswarar Temple is located.
